Camp Pendleton-based Marine Corporals Face Fines for Faking Marriages

The corporals admitted to faking marriages for financial gain.

1. Three Camp Pendleton-based Marine corporals are each facing $5,000 fines and three to six months confinement after admitting to faking marriages for financial gain, according to Marine Corps officials. Corporal Ashley Vice, who is lesbian, and her partner, civilian Jaime Murphy, married Corporal Jeremiah Griffin and Corporal Joseph Garner in order to collect $1,200 monthly housing stipends reserved for married Marines to live off base, according to published reports. The three corporals pleaded guilty at a special court martial to stealing from the government through fraud, Marine Corps officials said. In addition to fines and confinement, all three received bad conduct discharges

2. A former Camp Pendleton Marine was convicted Monday of first-degree murder for raping and strangling a masseuse in a downtown San Diego massage parlor nearly 36 years ago. Jurors deliberated only a few hours before finding Leon Johnson, 58, guilty of killing 27-year Luz Borrayo on Nov. 22, 1975.

3. Jerry Lee, chancellor of the National University System since 2001, will step down at the end of the next calendar year, the school announced Monday. Lee said, "The past 22 years have been some of the most extraordinary years of my life, and I have been blessed to have been associated with such outstanding students, faculty, staff, trustees and friends of the system community."
