Caltrans Announces Expansion Plans for Interstate 5

Two new car pool lanes will be built in each direction on Interstate 5 in the North County.

1. Caltrans officials announced Thursday that two new car pool lanes will be built in each direction on Interstate 5 in the North County, but there will be no additional lanes for solo drivers. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2013 if the project is approved by a variety of state and federal agencies, said Allan Kosup, the director of the Interstate 5 corridor for the agency.

2. Dick Williams, the manager who led the San Diego Padres to their first World Series appearance, died Thursday in Las Vegas, reportedly of a brain aneurysm. He was 82. The Padres had only finished over .500 once in 13 seasons before Williams took over in 1982, and immediately guided the team to a pair of 81-81 records. In his third season, 1984, the Padres raced to the National League West title and defeated the Chicago Cubs in a championship series marked by Steve Garvey's dramatic home run that won Game 4.

3. Net income for San Diego-based WD-40 declined in the third quarter, which ended May 31, and in the first nine months of the fiscal year, the firm reported Thursday. Third quarter earnings were $8.1 million, down 12 percent from the same time period in 2010. For the year to date, net income was $26.2 million, down 10 percent.
