Burn Institute Warns Residents of Telephone Solicitors

The institute says solicitors are claiming they are raising money for children with burn injuries.

1. Officials with the Burn Institute Friday are cautioning San Diegans to beware of telephone solicitors claiming to be raising money for children with burn injuries. Officials say that there have been reports of such calls recently but reputable groups don't raise money through telemarketing.

2. A bill by a San Diego legislator that seeks to add $100,000 to the bail of defendants who have previously failed to appear in court is one step closer to becoming law Friday. The state Senate unanimously passed the bill yesterday. Its author is state Senator Juan Vargas. The bill will now be heard by the Assembly Public Safety Committee.

3. The cruiser USS Lake Champlain will return to Naval Station San Diego Friday from a seven-month deployment. The Navy ship went through the Panama Canal and crossed the Atlantic Ocean to reach areas covered by the U.S. Central Command, which includes the Middle East and South Asia.
