Authorities Hold Annual National Prescription Take Back Day

Drop off your extra or expired prescription drugs this weekend at the sheriff's station.

1. The second annual National Prescription Take Back will be held Saturday to encourage people to clean out their medicine cabinets and dispose of medications before they are misused. Powegians can dispose medications at the sheriff's station.

2. The three finalists to succeed Stephen Weber as president of San Diego State University were named Friday and will visit the campus next week. The finalists are: Elliot Hirshman, provost and senior vice president, University of Maryland, Baltimore County; Steven Leath, vice president for research and sponsored programs for the University of North Carolina system; and Paul J. Zingg, president of California State University, Chico.

3. A Marine based at USMC Air Station Miramar was stricken by an undetermined illness at the military station this week and died en route to a hospital, authorities announced Friday. The Marine, whose identity was withheld pending family notification, was found unconscious in an undisclosed location at the base on Thursday and was pronounced dead while being transported to a trauma center, according to Marine Corps officials.
