58 Drivers Arrested on Suspicion of Drunken Driving Over Holiday Weekend

The CHP also announced that there were five traffic deaths.

Drunken Driving Arrests

The California Highway Patrol Monday announced there were five traffic deaths and 58 suspected drunken driving arrests in San Diego County over the New Year's holiday weekend.

The deaths were reported by law enforcement agencies in San Diego County between 6 p.m. Friday and 11:59 p.m. Sunday, up from just one during the same period last year, the CHP said.

Drunken driving arrests were down slightly from 60 during the same time frame last year.

Statewide, the CHP logged 22 traffic deaths, down from 25 recorded last year. Eleven of the deaths this year occurred in CHP jurisdictions and, in 10 instances, those killed were not wearing seat belts, according to the CHP.

Drunken driving arrests were up, with CHP officers arresting 1,181 people this year, compared to 961 last year.

Coronado Killings

Authorities confirmed Monday that two of four people killed in a Coronado condominium about two hours into the new year were Navy pilots stationed at Miramar.

The names of those killed were being withheld today for unknown reasons. A spokesman for the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office said the records had been "sealed" at the request of sheriff's deputies, but said two of the dead were 25, one an "active-duty Navy," and the other a Navy officer. The office later removed that information from its website.

Looking for Prisoner

Law enforcement officers Monday sought a prisoner who stole a fire engine to escape from Richard J. Donovan state prison in Otay Mesa on New Year's Day.

Thomas Francis Kelly, 51, worked as a prison firefighter. He was locked up for a parole violation stemming from a a 2008 car theft conviction, Lt. Patrick Logan of the state prison system said.
