42,000 San Diego County Students Still Need Pertussis Vaccine

A new state law requires that children entering seventh through 12th grades prove they are current with the shot.

More than 42,000 students in San Diego County still need to prove that they are up to date with their Tdap vaccination so they can enter school for the fall semester, according to area health and education officials. A new state law requires that children entering seventh through 12th grades prove they are current with the shot, which helps prevent pertussis, tetanus and diphtheria. Schools can provisionally enroll students without proof, but they'll have one month to show that they've been vaccinated.

2. Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is scheduled Saturday to attend a private brunch with his wife Anne at an undisclosed location in the San Diego area. The former Massachusetts governor, who owns a home in La Jolla, is expected to remain in the area for the weekend, but no other events are scheduled, campaign aide Ryan Williams said. 3. State Attorney General Kamala Harris Friday announced the arrests of 15 people in a large-scale prescription drug trafficking organization that allegedly smuggled pharmaceuticals from San Diego, Los Angeles and Riverside counties into Mexico and used proceeds to fund its criminal activity in the United States. Harris said the California Department of Justice's Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement began the investigation after conducting numerous border stops of members of the drug trafficking organization, some of whom were gang members.
