Student-Run Company Wins Best Financial Performance Award in D.C.

Eleven students from Westview High School competed against 64 others at the Junior Achievement USA competition that took place earlier this month.

During an economy when storefronts are constantly closing, 11 teens from Westview High School look to be in good shape.

The creators of Place~Mate―a laminated place mat intended to help teach preschoolers learn shapes, sizes and letters―recently won the Best Financial Performance Award at the Junior Achievement USA competition hosted in Washington, D.C.

It’s been a long road for the high school students, who participated in a series of qualifying events to advance to the final competition.

“We’re honored to receive the financial performance award,” said Place~Mate’s Trevor Minear. “Creating the ideas for these projects is easy—it’s the profitability part that’s tough. We appreciate being rewarded for that process.”

In addition to Minear, the Place~Mate team consists of Chris Rolfson, Trevor Venegas, Jaclyn Powell, Paige Fontana, Natalie Al-Rayes, Josh Knopman, Andrew Young, Nabila Sakhi, Ibrahim Tafla and André Hoss.

Place~Mate was one of 15 competing companies composed of 75 students.

According to officials, the financial award is given to the “student team which performs best against a high level of set criteria including profitability, stockholder expectations, employee earnings, product quality, leadership and operational efficiency.”

The award was presented at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and followed a trade fair where each participating student company was given the opportunity to promote and sell their product.
