Poway Valley Vaulters Search for New Corral

After a total of 20 years at Rolling Hills Stables, horse trainer Bonnie Bruce and her team are asked to leave.

In two short years, the Poway Valley Vaulters have cantered into success, and now have three regional champions on their equestrian team.

But instead of prepping for future competitions, PVV finds itself packing to move out of Rolling Hills Stables―where team founder Bonnie Bruce has trained horses for the past 20 years.

Advanced coach Sara Nicholson says the request to leave came as a complete surprise, but that they don’t harbor any ill feelings toward the stable owners.

“We may be bringing in more activity than they’re comfortable with. It’s not a good fit anymore,” said Nicholson, adding that last year PVV taught lessons to 150 students, including some with disabilities known as the Dream Team.

Depending on where they settle, Nicholson worries they might lose some of their two dozen regulars, and says they can only afford to bring three of their four horses.

Sure to come along is a PMU named Max, a rescue who is now their “big, beautiful (lead) vaulting horse.”

And while they’re forced to entertain the idea of moving out of Poway, Nicholson says their goal is to stay local.

“The thing is, we’re Poway vaulters,” Nicholson said. “So we want to just stay where the community is.”
