Poway Unemployment Rate Slightly Increases

Poway's unemployment rate rose to 5.5 percent in June.

The unemployment rate in Poway increased to 5.5 percent in June, up from 5.2 percent in May, according to figures released by the Employment Development Department on Friday. San Diego County’s figures also increased to 9.2 percent in June, compared with 8.8 percent in May, but down from 10.4 percent in June 2011, according to the EDD.

The figure for San Diego County for June 2012 compares with 10.7 percent unemployment in California and 8.4 for the nation, according to the EDD. The figures are not seasonally adjusted.

San Diego region's unemployment rate increased despite the addition of about 13,400 jobs, because 15,000 people were added to the 1.6-million-person civilian labor force.

The EDD statistics showed strong growth in the seasonal leisure and hospitality industry, which added 7,200 positions between May and June.
Construction, which was hit hardest in the recession, added 2,600 jobs, and
professional and business services gained 1,800.

Over the past year, the figures show large increases in the number of
jobs in professional and business services, educational and health services,
and leisure and hospitality.

The total number of unemployed people in San Diego County in June was
147,800, compared with 139,600 the month before. The June total was still
about 16,500 fewer unemployed people than the same time in 2011.
