Poway News Chieftan Among 8 Newspapers Bought by U-T San Diego

The sale is expected to close Monday. The price was not disclosed.

The Poway News Chieftan has been acquired by U-T San Diego, thenewspaper announced Friday. 

The weekly is one of eight community newspapers purchased in the deal with Mainstreet Communications, which also includes the Del Mar Times, La Jolla Light, Rancho Bernardo & 4S Ranch News Journal, Solana Beach Sun, Carmel Valley News, Rancho Santa Fe Review and Ramona Sentinel.

U-T San Diego Publisher "Papa" Doug Manchester said in a statement, “We are thrilled to be taking on the stewardship of these community newspapers. We firmly believe that community news is one of the hallmarks of strong local newspapers, and we intend to continue this legacy for many years to come.”

The sale is expected to close Monday. The price was not disclosed.

U-T San Diego CEO John Lynch said the purchase was part of the newspaper's strategy to broaden hyperlocal news coverage. Altogether, the eight weekly newspapers have a total circulation of 99,431 copies, according to U-T San Diego.
