Poway Jobless Rate Up Slightly in January

Unemployment numbers rise in January after months of declines.

After dropping for five straight months, the unemployment rate in Poway rose slightly in January, according to figures released Friday by the state Employment Development Department.

For the first month of 2012, Poway had a 5.5 percent unemployment rate, up .1 percent from December 2011. That rate is still below the county’s rate, which rose .3 percent in January to 9.3 percent.

The statewide and nationwide unemployment rates were 11.3 percent and 8.8 percent in January, respectively. Those numbers were also higher than the previous month.

There were 22,500 fewer non-farm jobs in San Diego County in January than the month before, with the biggest losses in retail trade at the end of the holiday season; education and health services; and construction, according to the EDD.

No major sectors gained positions.

San Diego County had 147,500 people unemployed in January out of a total workforce of nearly 1.6 million.
