Despite Wanting a Son, Dad Scores With First Born Daughter

Veronica Salcido played whatever sport she could in high school—even boys' soccer.

Like many fathers out there, Salvador Salcido really wanted a son. He eventually got two, but that was only after he welcomed four daughters into the world.

“I was the first born and my dad taught me all the sports I played except for volleyball,” said owner Veronica Salcido, who admits she was a tomboy.

She dabbled in everything from baseball to boxing, at one point having as many as a 12 varsity letters to her name.

Of Mexican-American descent, Salcido says her mother was at once traditional and independent, telling her daughters they could do anything. It was with that mindset that she tried out for the boys’ soccer team at Fresno High and made it.

“The guys didn’t think I could play as well as they did,” said Salcido, 53, but she remembers they accepted the concept long before the fathers of would-be team members did.

Baseball remains her favorite sport, though she hasn’t played catch with her dad in a while. She says he had to play it safe for health reasons.

“My dad golfs now,” Salcido said.
