Local Landmark Gets Face Lift in Time for 125th Anniversary

The Community Church of Poway's Victorian-style chapel was built in 1887 and still has many of the original features.

Nowadays, are getting plastic surgery. Likewise, centenarians are also getting work done. One such “elderly lady”―as some in town call her―can be found on the corner of Community Road and Hilleary Place.

To residents, she’s better known as the ’s Queen Anne Victorian-style chapel. Built in 1887, the historic building is undergoing renovations in preparation for its 125th anniversary next year.

According to church moderator Karen Reynolds, the project is estimated to cost $50,000 and will include extensive façade repairs, like a complete reroofing and repainting as well as the replacement of carpeting.

Reynolds says the redwood chapel is the longest-standing structure that has remained continuously in use for religious services in San Diego County. Its simple design, wooden pews, scalloped shingles and traditional bell have been preserved to represent the founding era.

The church is currently seeking donations to help with the remodeling―all of which are tax deductible. They can be mailed or brought to 13501 Community Road, Poway, CA 92064. Checks should be made payable to the Community Church of Poway with the memo “Chapel Preservation.”
