Celebrating Fridays With Domenic's Eggplant Parmigiana

The charming restaurant on Poway Road has been serving classic Italian dishes since 1991.

For awhile I attempted to make Thursdays my “Thankful Thursdays.” The one day a week I’d relax a bit, delegate a little more and be thankful for all the good things in my life. With jam-packed meetings, tons of stories and more filling my “Thankful Thursdays” though, I had to renegotiate with the universe.

So then came “Freedom Fridays.” I prepared this time around, though. I got it all done on my previously thankful day and chose to relax just a bit more on Friday. So on this particular Friday, I invited to . I figured as I work my butt off for the beach-ready body, I could free myself from the pressure and try the famed restaurant’s vegetarian lasagna.

Unfortunately, the restaurant didn't have it. A bit disappointed that I wouldn’t be able to compare my lasagna to theirs, I asked the waiter for suggestions. He recommended eggplant parmigiana or the penne alla Trevisana. Though both read D-E-L-I-C-I-O-U-S, I opted for the eggplant dish.

Kristine and I started our lunch at the cozy and welcoming restaurant with the bruschetta alla Toscana. Though the apps were satisfying, I’m accustomed to bruschetta bread served with a little more crisp. The starter could’ve also been better had it been tomato season, as the tomatoes didn’t seen so fresh, but that’s not the restaurant’s fault, as Kristine pointed out.

Then came my main dish—eggplant, yum! The eggplant was drenched with mozzarella cheese and the dish was garnished with a couple veggies, and of course, it was paired with classic spaghetti. Being the veggie-intense eater that I am, I ate all my veggies while barely touching the spaghetti (OK, I really didn't touch it at all). The dish was fabulous and well worth a return trip...and another, and another, and another, etc.

With delicious dishes, good company and a charming waiter who told us he’s been serving up eggplant parmigiana at the restaurant for 15 years, Domenic’s Italian Ristorante was the perfect way to kick off my Freedom Fridays.

Vegetarian-friendliness on a scale of 1-10: 9 as it did have plenty of items to choose from but I'm going to boost its score to a perfect 10 because its website has a classic Italian song playing: Domenicsristorante.com.
