Malware May Shut off Internet Service on Infected Computers

A global hacking scam infected hundreds of thousands of computers last year. Most have been cleaned of the malware, but infected computers will loose Internet access Sunday night.

A computer hacking scam taken down by the FBI last year infected more than 570,000 computers around the world. Internet service providers have notified customers about the malware and have created help pages to rid computers of the infection, with Facebook and Google also spreading the word.

According to the Associated Press, there are still more than 277,000 computers worldwide still infected with the malware. If those computers aren’t scrubbed clean of the infection by Sunday at 9:01 p.m. PDT, they will loose their ability to connect to the Internet.

A website brought in by the FBI guides users through a process to see if a computer is infected and dismantle the malware.
