[Updated] 1 Dead After Poway Fire Engine Hits Car

A car was struck broadside by a fire engine on its way to an emergency with its lights and sirens activated.

A motorist was injured and his female passenger killed at a Poway intersection early Thursday when his car was struck broadside by a fire engine on its way to an emergency with its lights and sirens activated.

The Poway public-safety vehicle struck the Honda at Poway and Midland Roads and pushed it into a roadside light pole about 4 a.m., according sheriff's officials.

The female passenger died at the scene and the driver was transported to the hospital for injuries of undetermined severity, authorities said.

Lt. Clayton Lisk said no one in the fire engine was hurt.

The fatal crash caused a SigAlert, which was lifted just after 11 a.m., California Highway Patrol reported.

One person was killed and another injured when a Poway fire engine collided with a car while rushing to an incident early Thursday, authorities said.

The engine struck the smaller vehicle in the intersection of Poway and Midland Roads around 4 a.m., according to San Diego County sheriff's Lt. Clayton Lisk.

A passenger in the car died at the scene and the driver was taken to a hospital with unspecified injuries, he said.

No one was hurt in the fire engine, which was responding to a medical call with its lights and sirens on.

A SigAlert was in effect for westbound Poway Road at Midland.

This is the third fatal accident in Poway in the last week. On Wednesday, an Escondido man was killed after striking a wall and metal pole on Pomerado Road. On June 13, a man from Lakeside was killed on Espola Road after possibly texting and driving.
