Dynamic Duo Bring Abstract Art to Poway

Painters Terry Anderson and Marlene Levitt have their work displayed at Café Lily.

Meet local artists Terry Anderson and Marlene Levitt—the duo that forms Temáre by collaborating on modern abstract paintings— from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 22 at .

The painters will be at an Artists’ Reception to greet visitors and speak about their collective and individual work, which has been on exhibit since Feb. 1 and will end on Feb. 29.

The two artists spontaneously formed the joint art project in 2008 after first meeting through the Rancho Bernardo Art Association.

“On a whim, I invited Terry to my home to do something different,” Levitt said. “We had a canvas and liquid bottles on the floor. We had no preconceived notion and started painting.”

Anderson, who is a realist painter, said Levitt thought of the idea to do abstract paintings.

“I didn’t even like abstract [but] I like to try different kinds of artwork,” Anderson said. “We just started throwing paint down. It was just fun. It was this freedom of expression that we didn’t have before.”

Anderson said she usually paints landscapes with bodies of water, such as Hawaiian beaches.

“I’m real good at blending the colors and looking at the picture,” Anderson said. “[Levitt is] really good at what colors we should use to make that painting pop.”

On the other hand, Levitt paints colorfully stylized acrylic paintings.

Since its inception, Levitt and Anderson have created about 25 to 30 works of art.

“We work well together because we put our egos aside and focus on the resolve,” Anderson said. “She’s got her strengths and I’ve got mine.”

Levitt agreed.

“We are two offices, in philosophy and everything, but we get along fantastically,” Levitt said. “We have a real mutual respect for each other.”
