Jeffrey Joe Morin to Perform for Poway Folk Circle

The local musician and songwriter will play a variety of acoustic songs on guitar and harmonica.

Somewhere in between the mechanics of music and engineering, you’ll find Jeffrey Joe Morin—a local acoustic musician and songwriter with a knack for blues, soul, swing, jazz, honky-tonk, R&B and pop songs.

The former mechanical engineer and Vietnam veteran will be a guest performer for the Poway Folk Circle. The event is called Jeffrey Joe Morin and Friends, which takes place at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 19, in Templar’s Hall in . PFC Founder Jeff Bertino will join Morin for a few songs.

“I love playing in Templar’s Hall,” Morin said. “I just love that room. It has the best acoustics and it’s the best listening room.”

Morin will play from his large collection of ballads, blues and what he calls “heartbroke laments.” He will also do acoustic guitar and harmonica renditions of Great American Songbook Classics.

“I write a lot of my songs and I’ll probably do all of those—all six of them,” Morin said.

Morin said he’ll be performing songs by Hank Williams, Jimmy Rogers and Woody Guthrie. He will play Rogers’ “Treasures Untold” and his own songs, such as “Big Red Lips,” “My Old Bride” and “Big Ol’ Heart.”

“I’ve always had an interest in American roots music,” Morin said. “Lewis Curtis came to my high school in 1964 and sung Hootenanny. I went to one of those and I was instantly a celebrity at school. It made a big difference in my life. That’s the time of Bob Dylan and Woody Guthrie.”

Morin never stopped songwriting and playing since then, even when he worked as an engineer.

“I’ve been playing for 50 years,” Morin said. “I never really stopped. After I retired, it seemed like the natural thing to do.”

Morin has performed for various Poway Folk Circle events in the past.

“I don’t think it’ll be any different. I’ll just sing until they tell me to stop,” Morin said.
