Film Series, Two Concerts Headline this Week's Arts Events in Poway

From an Interfaith Film Series to free concerts, Poway's got a plethora of arts activities coming up for the whole family.

Arts and entertainment this month in Poway will feature an interfaith film series, concerts in the park and a talent show.

Beginning this Thursday, the Poway Interfaith Team at the will present a film festival in the fellowship hall at the church. The three-week series will screen a different movie each Thursday through Aug. 18. The interfaith film series is a first for the church.

“It’s a wonderful movie series because it will really show the community how another California community dealt with a hate crime after 9/11, how they all came together and solved the problems,” Rev. Abigail Albert said. “They supported one another and did not give in to others.”

Each movie screening will begin at 6:45 p.m. will be followed by a group discussion.

  • Aug. 4: The film “Fremont U.S.A.” depicts the California city as a diverse, multi-religious community that faced new challenges, and created unprecedented outreach and bridge-building efforts when a terrible crime affected them all.
  • Aug. 11: The documentary “The Imam and the Pastor” shows how two enemies made a commitment to reconcile, forgive and put an end to the endless fighting and hate between two faith communities’ in the heart of Nigeria.
  • Aug. 18: The movie “With One Voice reveals what the most revered teachers and mystics from a variety of faiths think about mystical experiences, religious intolerance, and the way to peace.

Albert said Mayor Don Higginson and City Manager Penny Riley, among other leaders, will attend the screening of “Fremont U.S.A.”

The film series is open to the entire community. A donation of $5 is suggested.

The Sharp Memorial Hospital Summer Concert Series continues this Sunday with CoastRiders, a Jimmy Buffet tribute band.

The concert starts at 5:30 p.m. at , and is sponsored by the City of Poway and other donors.

Described as Jimmy Buffett mixed with the Marshall Tucker Band, the CoastRiders promise to deliver fun for all ages.  

Head out to the lake for some summertime fun and family entertainment. Concertgoers should bring a blanket or chairs, and are welcome to bring a picnic dinner or snacks.

This popular free concerts series has been put on for close to 20 years and often draws large crowds. Arriving early is recommended.

Parking at Lake Poway is free for Poway residents and active duty military with ID, and $5 for nonresidents. A free shuttle service will be provided from the north parking lot of Poway High School to the concert.

Last but not least in this week's Art Beat, be sure to make plans to attend Poway’s first Talent Contest and Concert in the Park, on Friday, Aug. 12. The show will take place at from 6:30 to 9 p.m.

Auditions were held in July, and the show promises to boast Poway’s best.

First-place awards include a $300, plus a karaoke player, while second place is $100 and third place is $50. There will be two divisions – ages 9-21, and 21 and older.

Following the talent show, Blast From the Past will perform some “oldies but goodies” from 8 to 8:45 p.m.
