City High-Dives with ‘Swim-In’ Movie Night

Everybody into the pool on Aug. 6 for a showing of "Despicable Me" under the stars.

We’ve all heard of the drive-in movie. Well, how about a swim-in movie? is hosting its annual, once-a-year Swim-In Movie on Saturday, Aug. 6. This year’s feature presentation will be Despicable Me shown on a giant movie screen at dusk.

“Along with our Movie in the Park series, this is a fun and affordable opportunity to bring the community together to enjoy a family-friendly movie while floating in the pool under the stars,” said Mark Olson, recreation supervisor for the city of Poway.

Families are encouraged to bring plenty of rafts, inner tubes and boogie boards to view the movie while swimming in the pool. Pool deck seating will also be available. The pool will open at 7 p.m. and close at approximately 10:30 p.m.

The swim-in movies have been going on for more than a decade. Previous showings have included: Surf’s Up, Monsters Inc., Kung Fu Panda, Shark Tale and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. However, possibly the most well-attended was Monsters Inc., as the city was able to get the movie before it was released on DVD, so the “crowd was huge,” said Olson.

Tickets are available in advance at the pool office or at the door for $3 per child, $4 per adult, and $12 per family (up to five people). For more information, visit Poway.org or call 858-668-4680.

A drier theatre option is Wonder of the World, which is a modern comedy playing at the , now through Sunday, Aug. 21. This is the first show of the theatre’s 31st season, playing for five weekends. Performance times are Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m.

Wonder of The World is about a dirty little secret that “Cass” discovers in her husband’s sweater drawer. It is so shocking that she feels she has no choice but to flee to the honeymoon capital of the world—aka Niagara Falls—in a desperate search for the life she thinks she missed out on. Directed by Raylene J. Wall and produced by Debbie David, this show promises to be funny with wicked whimsy and playfulness as Cass goes on a hysterical journey of self-discovery.

Tickets are $18 for general admission and $15 for seniors, students and active duty military. Reservations can be made through the Box Office at boxoffice@powpac.org or 858-679 8085.

And, coming up later this summer is PowPAC’s first installment of its Reader’s Theatre series—the one-woman-show, Edith Frank Remembers, Sunday, Aug. 7 at 7 p.m. All tickets are $10 for general admission. Reservations also can be made through the PowPAC Box Office.
