27 Marching Bands to Perform at PHS

Bands from all over Southern California will travel to Poway to compete for the Tournament Sweepstakes Trophy.

Drumline will meet at the 19th Annual Poway Invitational Field Tournament on Oct. 22.

The 26 schools—including Poway’s Emerald Brigade—will hit the field in front of a panel of judges from the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association.

“The competition highlights music, student teamwork and an intricate display of team cooperation and discipline,” said Paul Omholt, part of the PHS Music Boosters.

The PHS Music Boosters invites Powegians to “join this year’s pageantry for one band or for the entire day,” Omholt said.

The afternoon competition begins at 10:45 a.m., while the evening contest starts at 6 p.m., both at PHS’s Titan Stadium. There will also be a special performance by the San Diego State University Marching Aztecs.

Admission is $15 for adults, $10 for seniors and middle/high school students, and elementary students and younger are free. All proceeds support the PHS Instrumental Music Program. Parking is free at Lake Poway with a free shuttle.

Street Beat will continue the Poway Center for the Performing Arts’ 21st professional season Saturday Oct. 22 at 8 p.m. The theatrical song and dance show is a combination of “urban rhythm, hip hop moves, virtuoso percussion and astonishing acrobatics”—all using household items, found objects and just plain junk!

Merging African, Cuban, Latin, West African and jazz rhythms, Street Beat is a high-energy explosion, featuring a six-member company of drummers, musicians and dancers.

Tickets start at $10 for kids. For more details, visit powayarts.org or call 858-748-0505.

The POW! Foundation launches its annual raffle. The grand prize is a 2012 C Series Mercedes-Benz, courtesy of Mercedes-Benz of Escondido. Tickets are $100 each, and participants have a one-in-999 chance to drive home in the luxury prize.

The winning ticket will be drawn on Saturday, May 19, 2012.

Each raffle ticket automatically enters participants in a special Early Bird Drawing, which could win everything from a year’s worth of massages (Oct. 22) and two tickets to the Farmers Insurance Open Golf Tournament (Nov. 19) to a Taylor solid-body electric guitar (Jan. 21, 2012).

All proceeds from the contest go to the Foundation and its Arts in Education programs. For more information contact Lynn Wolsey at 858-668-4798.
