Weekend Yard Sale to Benefit 3-Day Cancer Walk

Tonya Richardson is holding a yard sale this weekend to raise money so she can walk in honor of her aunt.

The Susan G. Komen 3-Day Race for the Cure is coming up fast and a fellow Powegian needs your help so she can join the crusade for cleavage.

Tonya Richardson, an alumni walker of the race, has participated in the breast cancer research race for the past three years with a core group of ladies—Amy Johnson, Teresa Redmond and Jen Schultz. All four of the women are alum and are adding three “newbies” to their walking group this year: Cathy Miller, Christine Shearer and Heather Young.

“We all have our reasons for walking,” Richardson said in an email to Patch. “My personal reason has always been my mother, Sally Schultz.”

Richardson’s mom is a 15-year breast cancer survivor who taught Richardson what strength and positivity really is. Richardson’s aunt and cousin have been diagnosed with breast cancer since she started doing the race for the cure three years ago.

“My cousin remains cancer-free for the last year and a half, but my aunt was re-diagnosed earlier this year,” Richardson said. “Initially, I was not going to walk this year, but when she was in the hospital in August, I made a late decision to walk.”

Because of Richardson’s last minute, albeit honorable, decision to join the race, she’s essentially racing around to raise enough money to be a part of the cause. Each member of Richardson’s team is required to raise $2,300 in time for the 3-day event, which happens on Nov. 18. This weekend, Richardson and her teamed, the cleverly-named Cleave Crusaders, are with hopes of raising some funds—their second one in a month.

“On Oct. 15, we had a yard sale at the same location (as this year’s) as well as a Book Sale in the same day over at the Poway Farmers Market,” said Richardson. “We raised $1000 that day.”

People can expect the usual yard sale items—shoes, clothing, household items, furniture, a baby stroller, bike rack and more—to be sold this Saturday at 14153 Peachtree Ln. here in Poway. The yard sale starts at 7 a.m. and donations are being accepted, both monetary and items to use for sale. If you’d like to donate some items to be sold, call 858-449-9870.

“The first year I walked, fundraising was easier,” Richardson said. “But as the years go on, I have found that I have to find more creative ways other than sending emails to family and friends asking for donations.”

The Susan G. Komen 3-Day Race is a three day long, 60-mile walk. The ladies of the Cleavage Crusaders will camp out in tents on the side of the road during the long journey and will travel through Del Mar, La Jolla, the Bay, Balboa Park and even PETCO Park.

“Many people may now knot that they can send mail to the campers,” Richardson said. “We have an actual post office on site! There’s nothing like a letter from a loved one to inspire you to keep going.”
