We Love a Good Poway Parade

This week's Poway Gives Back includes the Poway Patriotic Parade, leadership training and more.

PIFT GIVES MUSIC A BOOST

The Music Boosters biggest fund-raising event of the year is underway and they need your help. The school's marquee event, Poway Invitational Field Tournament (PIFT for short) is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 22nd. The Boosters would like you to invite your friends, neighbors and family who have businesses, causes and organizations, to place an ad in the PIFT program, which will be handed out to an expected 3,000 attendees. The goal is to raise $25,000 for the school's music programs. Deadline is September 30. Find out more information on its website.

BE A LEADER

I mentioned a couple of weeks ago in this column that the Poway Community Leadership Institute's next seminar is Wednesday, Oct. 12, from 8:45 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Poway Council Chambers. Now a project of the , the goal of PCLI is to grow leaders who will better the lives of people both locally and globally. Learn how the city of Poway is run. Learn how our health system works, who handles traffic, growth planning, fire, water, what's happening in the business community and a lot more. As Mayor Don Higginson joked at Rotary's last meeting, he's still trying to learn how the city runs with 25 years of experience! It's a very comprehensive all-day seminar. Space is limited. If you've thought of stepping up to lead sign up now. Visit its website for more information.

SHELTER FROM THE STORM

Members of the Soroptimist International of Poway set up new homes for its Transitional Housing Program recently. The Transitional Housing Program is a joint effort of Soroptimist International of Poway, Rancho Bernardo Soroptimist and Crisis House in El Cajon. The program allows these clubs to serve as a stepping stone for women and their children escaping domestic violence. They  help by providing shelter, food, clothing and mentoring for the women. If you or someone you know is in this situation, get help from the Transitional Housing Program by contacting Dena Carter at 760-716-9958 or Linda England at 858-679-8251.

I LOVE A PARADE

It started out very cool last Saturday morning for the Poway Patriotic Parade. Nice break from 102 degrees earlier in the week. Thanks to Any Time Towing for the use of their flatbed as we slid into space #70 with the big inflatable Rotary wheel. Scout troop 625 walked along with us. Great turnout along Poway Road. Yes, that's me on the far left of the Rotary float, waving right back at you with new member Pam McCormick, President Alan Noblitt and Ellie and Veronica Brenner.
