Community Corner

The Inaugural 'Poway Gives Back' Column: Highlighting Volunteerism in Poway

Every Monday, Rotary Club of Poway President Bill Stoudenmire will write about the philanthropic community in our city.

In spite of the lingering financial crisis, the citizens of our community continue to show they have a heart and a sense of caring for those who need assistance in reaching their goals. Powegians give back in a variety of ways, including time and services, donations of food and clothing, and financial contributions. This column is intended to aid, by creating awareness, and honor those groups and individuals who are helping to make a difference.

Threads of Hope

Tuscan Sunrise Coffee and Tea, in Old Poway Village, is selling bracelets to support "Threads of Hope," a nonprofit that helps impoverished communities throughout the world. Proceeds raised from the sale of bracelets at the local coffee house, which are $1 each, will go toward sponsoring eight students, who will volunteer at the Center for Disabled Teens and Young Adults in St. Petersburg, Russia, this July for a month. One of the students is Poway native and Seattle Pacific University student Deanna Leatherman.

Get the Spark

Meet, network and have fun with other local professionals while you assist the mission of the Boys & Girls Clubs in our area. San Diego Professionals Achieving Results with Kids, SPARK for short, is seeking passionate and energetic volunteers. Help the Boys & Girls Clubs continue to provide academic achievement, character development and physical fitness to kids ages 5 to 18.  Word is the group has a calendar full of fun events for the summer. Barbecue, Anyone?

Rotary Club of Poway is planning its annual fundraising barbecue set for Sunday, May 15, in the Pavilion at Lake Poway. Great food, live entertainment, live and silent auctions. The club's mission is to improve lives locally, nationally and globally. In addition to scholarships and support of school programs, dictionaries for Poway third-graders, preparing dinner for local seniors and support of local nonprofits such as the Community Coaching Center for autistic children, money raised helps with projects such as "adopt a village" in Uganda, providing clean drinking water, medical aid and a micro-credit program. Mark your calendar and bring your friends.
