Right on Target: Young Archer Wins Big in State Competitions

Wyatt Vaineharrison won two archery state tournaments at the age of 10.

Eleven-year-old Wyatt Vaineharrison is a straight shooter. So straight, in fact, the young Powegian recently won the 2011 State Field and State Target archery tournaments.

“I did not know I was going to win,” said Vaineharrison, who was 10 at the time and has practiced the sport since first grade.

He “was a bit nervous” during the State Field competition, but enjoyed spending the day with other young archers. It was the State Target that proved more of a challenge when “something really wacky happened” with the bow’s cable guard.

But not even technical difficulties could stop him.

“I held it together the whole time and I did my best to get those arrows in the target,” said Vaineharrison, who is homeschooled.

Vaineharrison often practices at the little known Lake Poway Archery Range. His parents have also joined in the archery action―mom Michele is an instructor and dad Joe is a community level coach.

Despite his success, Vaineharrison says he just likes to have a good time.

“I’m basically having fun,” he said. “And I think everyone should try to have fun with it because it’s very good for your form and concentration.”
