Rescue a Puppy, Make a New BFF on Saturday

This week's Poway Gives Back includes dog adoptions, a fashion show and more.

IHOP GIVES BACK FOR BACK-TO-SCHOOL

Powegians Sherry Rubin and Michael Szawielenko have been busy collecting school supplies for the nonprofit Youth Venture; the organization started 17 years ago to help parents instill sound character and life goals in their children. For two weeks, the IHOP restaurants owned by Szawielenko served as drop-off centers for the supplies while Rubin, the mother of Poway teen Aaron Rubin, who suffered brain damage as the result of a drug overdose, acted as coordinator for the event. For any Powegians wanting to provide further help to Youth Ventures, check out its website.

SECOND CHANCE ADOPTION

Want to give a puppy a new forever home? Poway's and Second Chance Dog Rescue, San Diego County's largest (and busiest!) dog rescue group, are hosting an adoption event Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the store. The Second Chance group rescues from local shelters, private surrenders, and from Baja, and their network of volunteer foster homes makes sure the dogs get the TLC and guidance they need prior to placement. All dogs are spayed/neutered, micro-chipped, and up to date on shots. Meet your new BFF on Saturday. Check out for more information.

RB CHORALE RECRUITING

Do you love to sing? The RB Chorale will soon be accepting new members. The musical group, which features singers from Poway and RB, will hold its first rehearsal for new members on Tuesday, Sept. 6, from 7:30-9:30 P.M. Find everything you need to know on the Chorale's website.

GIVING CIRCLE GIVES FASHION SHOW

The North County Giving Circle of Women's Empowerment International is hosting a fundraiser Sept. 18 from 2-4 p.m. The fundraiser, titled “A Century of San Diego Fashions,” will be produced by the San Diego Women's History Museum and will be held in Poway at the home of Winifred Cox, WE's co-founder and co-president. The organization provides microloans to women entrepreneurs in impoverished countries so they can start a business. Cox also serves as programs chairwoman for the Rotary Club of Poway. Get details on the WE fashion show on its website.
