Ready for the Winter Reading Challenge?

Readers of all ages can participate and win rewards, from today through Jan. 15.

Readers of all ages are invited to take part in the library's "Winter Reading Challenge," which begins today, Dec. 1, and runs through Jan. 15.

How to join in? There are three ways to earn prize drawing entries: check out five items, attend a program at the library, or write a book, movie or music review. That puts you in the running for one of the prizes given away each week, which will include board games, art sets, thumb drives, coffee mugs, free beverages,  and free tickets to local events. (Please keep in mind that not all entrants will win prizes.)

The program isn't just for kids—the point is to encourage library patrons to use the library's resources and services more.

The sponsors of the Winter Reading Challenge include San Diego Repertory Theatre, Lyric Opera, San Diego Latino Film Festival, San Diego Ballet, ReVisions Resources, San Diego Chapter of AARP, San Diego Chapter of American Society of Interior Designers, San Diego Derby Dolls, San Diego Sockers, Junior Theatre of San Diego, 7-11, Applebees, and Friends of San Diego County Library.

San Diego County Library Director Jose Aponte is encouraging everyone to "pull out the most valuable card in your wallet, check out the library and save by using your library card." In a  prepared press release, Aponte said, "Your library card is a value that continues to add up each time you visit. Save by checking out movies, music and books from more than 33 million items available at San Diego County Library. Save again by sharing time with friends and family at library programs."
