Suzanne Emery, who is inspired by fictional comic strip reporter Brenda Starr, has her own legacy in Poway.

After retiring from teaching journalism and English for 35 years, Emery is the vice president of the Kumeyaay-Ipai Interpretive Center, a park ranger at Poway parks, a poll worker during election years and even volunteers her time on Patch’s Moms Council.

The woman who teaches many in the region said her “pride” is her family and the notes of success she receives from former students.

“Professionally, my outstanding accomplishment comes when former students write to trumpet yet another personal media success, advancement or job title and attribute that to what they learned in Emery’s journalism classes at Morse, Madison or Mira Mesa high schools,” she said.
