Prime Poway Woman No. 28: Jeannie Hume

Hume is the owner of Crystal Gardens Florist.

Jeannie Hume has lived in Poway since she was a 6-month-old, and for that, the city is lucky.

Hume, who owns , is a member of the Soroptimist International of Poway, and .

Though she’s active in all three groups, she said being a Soroptimist means the most to her.

“Soroptimist is my favorite club to be a part of,” she said. “We are like one big family, sharing in each other’s lives, while at the same time, working together to improve the lives of women and children whom we don’t even know—both locally and globally. It is very rewarding for the soul.”

Hume said the best advice she can offer to other women is “to never say never.”

“I never wanted to own my own business, and I wanted to be grower of flowers when I was in college,” she said. “However, back in 1977, it was hard for a woman to get a job as a grower, so instead I went the floral design route of my education. That, needless to say, led to me opening Crystal Gardens Florist in 1984.

“You never know where life is going to lead you!”

What does Women’s History Month mean to you?

“This month is the opportunity to reflect on those women who sacrificed so much in honor of us being women—that nothing should stand in your way of success except yourself. Let us go forth and do the same for the next generation.”
