If you've ever stepped into Poway's library, you may have to thank Wendy Rios.

Rios is the president of the Friends of Poway Library, a nonprofit that raises funds to support the local book haven. The group raised $60,000 last year alone.

Rios, who moved to Poway 15 years ago with her family, has always been passionate about libraries and literacy, too.

"I grew up with books in my crib," she said. "I married a reader and we have a wonderful daughter who is a reader, too. Not a day goes by where I don't read a book."

Rios is also involved in the Poway Woman's Club, often helps with activities in Old Poway Park and volunteers at the Villa Monte Vista nursing home.

But her leadership in the community and the inspiration she supplies to other readers isn't what she is most proud of. The Prime Poway Woman said overcoming a disorder is her greatest accomplishment.

"I think the thing I am proudest of is that I have been able to overcome my Social Anxiety Disorder, which previously crippled my life, and have been able to be an effective leader in my role as president of the Friends of the Library," she said. "Previous to moving to Poway, I was unable to socialize or do any public speaking without panic attacks and anxiety. I have really opened up and become the person I am meant to be."

What does Women's History Month mean to you?

"Women's History Month to me is a way of honoring all of the women who have always worked so hard whether behind the scenes or in the forefront of social justice, education, science, and the arts. By honoring women we set goals and guidelines for all the young women who follow us."
