Prime Poway Woman No. 11: Peggy Stewart

Stewart is a long-time member of Soroptimist International of Poway and Poway Center for the Performing Arts Foundation.

Peggy Stewart’s 35-year-career in public service didn’t stop her from giving extra hours to the causes that mean most to her.

Stewart, the former administrative services director for the city of Poway, is a 19-year member of Soroptimist International of Poway and a 12-year member of the Poway Center for the Performing Arts Foundation. Despite her rich history in the city, Stewart says she’s “honored” to be a Poway Prime Woman.

“I know so many women in our community who make a difference every day in a myriad of ways, and am very touched to be counted as one of them,” she said.

Though Stewart has found success, it didn’t come without challenges.

“The biggest challenge throughout that time (career) was finding a way to balance my personal and professional life,” she said. “I believe that is an even more difficult challenge today with all of the demands of being expected to do more with less in the workplace and the stress placed on families during a time of such economic uncertainty.

“My advice to other women is to breathe. To acknowledge how heavy your load is and to shift that load whenever you can to other members of your family or co-workers. To accept that things don’t have to be perfect and focus on what’s really important – it’s OK if some things fall through the cracks. In the end, it’s our relationships that matter the most. Always take the time to let people know that you care about them.”

What does Women’s History Month mean to you?

“Women’s History Month is a time to reflect on all of the courageous women who came before us, to be thankful to those who have done so much to improve the lives of women, and to renew our commitment to continue to fight for the rights of women around the world.”
