Powegians Batter Up for a Good Cause

This week's Poway Gives Back includes plenty of baseball and some Mickey D's.

STRIKE OUT DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

It'll be the second softball matchup for the office of the San Diego City Attorney and the city of Poway when Operation for HOPE Foundation's second annual Strike-Out Domestic Violence takes to the private diamond in Poway—owned by Operation 4 Hope Director Kimerly Weisz and her husband—on Saturday, Sept. 17, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Last November's big loser was domestic violence before about 150 attendees. The "healthy competition" raises funds for the HOPE emergency microloan fund, which provides small, interest-free loans to domestic violence victims. A limited number of spectator tickets are available for $20 (17 and over) and $10 (under 17). The event will be emceed this year by World Series champion David Justice. Celebrity coaches are former Padres all-star pitcher and Cy Young Award winner Randy Jones and Major League Baseball player and coach Merv Rettenmund. Get sponsorship and ticket details on its website.

PLAY BALL!

The Poway American Little League is gearing up for a new fall season. This year, the Poway Little League is celebrating 50 years of serving the community's young baseball players, ranging in age from 4-16. League President Don Sharp says the main focus isn't how many games you win or how good you are, it's the leadership, responsibility and life lessons learned on the field that are most important. Get sponsorship information or information on how to sign up your children on the league website.

PHS MUSIC BOOSTERS

It's been a long time since I picked up a clarinet and marched 8 to 5 down a football field. Still, the memories have stayed with me all my life. One of the great things about Poway is that we don't let a little thing like budget shortfalls stand in the way of our kids getting a well-rounded education, and that includes good music programs. The Music Boosters are starting a new season. The winning Emerald Brigade needs sponsors right now. There are several levels to choose from. Get information on its website.

WE'RE LOVIN' IT

The Rotary Club of Poway will be serving dinner Tuesday, Aug. 23, at Ronald McDonald House to parents of children receiving care at Rady Childrens Hospital next door. The parents are often too stressed to think about getting a meal for themselves. We typically prepare and serve food to over 100 staying at the "home away from home."
