The 12-year-old is often viewed as a leader by her troop and other local troops. In fact, Hernandez was awarded the Copley Award for Citizenship in 2007.

Hernandez has continued her community service since then. Each year, she helps collect school supplies at St. Michael's School. The supplies are donated to a sister school in Mexico.

Hernandez also often helps organize troop events. Last year, she helped plan a special occasion for the local service area’s troop leaders and their daughters.

In addition to the Girl Scouts, Hernandez is actively involved at her school. She has participated in the school’s safety ambassadors program to help prevent bullying.

Recently, Hernandez was accepted to the Academic Junior High Decathlon. Of the 12 team members, only Hernandez and one other student are sixth graders. The remaining students are in seventh and eighth grade. The team represents St. Michael's School at competitions that test knowledge of Roman Catholic doctrine, English, literature, science, mathematics, social studies, fine arts, current events and logic.
