Poway Soroptimists to Participate in California Against Slavery's Walkathon

Also in this week's Poway Gives Back, the International Youth Symphony pays a visit to the Rotary Club, and a deadline to request veteran seating for the Poway Patriotic Parade is extended.

E-FUNDRAISING

In challenging economic times like these, fundraisers have to be more creative in order to reach their goals. The National Charity League, Poway Chapter, has adopted a strategy that accomplishes the task without causing donors to spend extra money from their budget. The League, which gives back in the form of philanthropic, educational and cultural activities while fostering the mother-daughter relationship, has put up an "E-Shop" page on the Internet. When you shop for items on (for instance) Amazon, if you access Amazon through NCL's e-shop page, the charity gets a "referral" fee for each item you buy. You may have noticed that some schools in the PUSD have adopted a similar strategy on their websites. Here's the link: Nclpoway.org/fundraiser.htm. Add it to your favorites and the next time you need a gift, e-shop through the National Charity League and support its work with the Poway Senior Center, Special Olympics, Poway Library, Humane Society and more.

CALIFORNIA AGAINST SLAVERY

Soroptimist International of Poway is joining forces with other area Soroptimists for California Against Slavery's Walkathon and Race on Sunday, Aug. 28, at Harbor Island Park in San Diego. The Poway members will participate in the walk in memory of former member Claire Bugado, who devoted much of her time to ending human trafficking before she passed away. Entree fees are $15 (under 18) and $35 (18 and older) and both include a T-shirt. Get more information here: Californiaagainstslavery.org/get-involved/walk/

VOLUNTEER TO GIVE BACK

If you have the time and are willing to spend it to help the city save dollars, there are plenty of opportunities for you in Poway—from being a docent to an historical guide. Check out the volunteer listings on the city's website

PATRIOTIC PARADE

The Poway Patriotic Parade, honoring those who serve, will be held on Saturday, Sept. 10, along Poway Road. Organizers this year have arranged special seating for veterans. Requests are being handled by the local Kiwanis Club, and the deadline has been extended to Aug. 15. The form can be found on the Poway Community Association's website.

The was treated to a French Horn concert at its regular Wednesday noon meeting at the last week.
