Carla Bange won second place in the adult portion of the art contest.

The contest, which ended May 31, was open to all ages with categories for kids (12 and below), teens (13-17), and adults (18 and older). Prizes were awarded to the top three winners from each category.

Shi, who won third place in the teen category, used her artwork to tell the story of growth, both in the library and the world, through a drawing of a tree.

"The words on the trunk (imagine, believe, dream, aspire, persevere, inspire) show how an idea can become a creation and lead to a golden legacy left upon our posterity," Shi said. "The ten main branches each display a component of the Dewey Decimal System to portray the development of the San Diego County Library."

The first place winners in each age group will have their artwork featured on bookmarks distributed at all County Library locations, and all nine winners received prizes and will be featured in a rotating art exhibit at branches throughout the county.

"Art is a form of expression that is universally recognized throughout various mediums and cultures," said Library Director José Aponte. "This art contest brought customers of all ages and backgrounds together to create and explore art and literature at the library."
