Poway Librarian Gives 5 Summer Audio Book Picks

Now that school is out, some of us have more leisure time to sit back and dive into a good book. But for those of us still on the go, there's the audio book!

Poway Library Branch Manager Penny Taylor gave her top five light "reads" for the summer. Pop them in your car stereo and listen on the way to work, to summer camp or your summer getaway spot.

"These are all fun with readers that are engaging," Taylor said.

All audio books can be checked out at the library for three weeks at a time.

1) Alan Bradley's "Flavia DeLuce" series.

"This series is about a precocious teen in 20th Century England. It's a charming, beautiful read," according to Taylor.

2) Any book by author Maeve Binchy.

"She writes about a small town in Ireland. It's beautifully written and charming and funny," Taylor said. "It's very well-read."

3) Elizabeth Wein's "Code Name Verity."

Taylor said this book is a WWII drama that's "very exciting." She said the main characters are a woman spy and a woman pilot and called it "empowering, but sad."

4) "Inspector Gamache" Series by Louise Penny.

The author is French-Canadian, so Taylor said the book is fun to be heard read and called the main character a "lovely detective."

"The series is fun, but can get kind of dark," she said.

5) Anything by Michael Crichton.

"We have almost everything by him on audio," Taylor said. "All of his books are really exciting, seem like they could be real and just fun."

Taylor suggested some of Crichton's classics, like "Jurassic Park" and "State of Fear."

The Poway Community Library is located at 13137 Poway Road.
