Poway Gives Back: Kiwanis, Kids and the Love of Reading

See how your neighbors have helped raise money for students to go to college.

KIWANIS HITS HOME RUN FOR RADY

Word is the Poway Kiwanis Club's 16th Annual Padres Spring Training kickoff luncheon was a home run. The event was Feb. 7 with a reported 320 fans attending at the Holy Family Center at St. Michaels Church. The winners are Rady Children's Hospital and those students who will benefit from college scholarships this year as the club raised nearly $10,000. They're saying that's a new one for the record books. Hamburger Factory provided the barbeque lunch. On hand were Padres Manager Bud Black and members of the team. Play-by-play man Bob Scanlan emceed and City Councilman Jim Cunningham was auctioneer. The Kiwanis Club meets Thursdays for breakfast at the Hamburger Factory. Visit them at powaykiwanis.org.

It's fundraising month at the Sulpizio Branch of the Boys and Girls Club in Poway. Their goal is to raise $1,500 in February to fund the club's healthy habits program to combat childhood obesity by teaching kids to eat and cook right through cooking classes and daily health and physical education classes. This is the local Boys and Girls Club's only fundraiser of the year. Some of the goal has been raised through Big Change Fridays, where the kids bring in their loose change as a contribution. Here's where the Little Jump/Big Changes theme comes in: the month will end with a jump rope event on March 1.

The Sulpizio Boys and Girls Club is open year round and averages about 80 kids per day during the school year and 150 per day during the summer. It's located at 12988 Bowron Rd., next to Valley Elementary School, serves kids K-8 and offers transportation pickup services from several local elementary schools. I LOVE TO READ!

The Friends of the Poway Library is holding its winter I Love To Read  book sale this Saturday, Feb. 23, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the library meeting room at 13137 Poway Rd. Call me old school, but I still like to hold my John Sandford novels in my hand and actually turn the pages. And the batteries never run out! Fifty cents for a hardcover and 25 cents for paperback and all children’s books is definitely my price. All proceeds will benefit the Poway Library and its programs. For details call 858-513-2900.
