Poway Gives Back: Hall of Fame, Bark at the Park, Charity League

Find out who will be inducted into the Poway High School Hall of Fame, and which 16 girls have been honored for thousands of hours of volunteering.

BARK AT THE PARK

The annual Dog Day event at the dog park at Poway Community Center/Park is back on Saturday, May 18 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Put on by the Poway Kiwanis Club and the Poway News Chieftain, the day will include demonstrations, pet vendor booths, contests for participants and their pets, pet adoptions and more. Admission is free. A small entry fee of $10 is required to enter your four-legged-kid in any of the dog shows. Ribbons will be awarded for best dog trick, best dog costume, the dog who looks most like his owner, best talking dog, biggest, smallest and so forth. Food will be available for purchase throughout. There will be entertainment by the Ballastic Racers and the Sheriff's Deptartment K-9 Unit. Mayor Don Higginson will be the celebrity judge. Monies raised will benefit Rady Children's Hospital and the club's high school scholarship programs.

Congratulations to the 16 high school senior girls who were honored for their six years of community service by the Poway Chapter of the National Charity League at it's 13th annual Senior Recognition Ceremony at Maderas Golf Club on Saturday, April 27. Founded in 1925, The National Charity League is a philanthropic organization committed to fostering the mother daughter relationship, providing leadership skills and cultural awareness all while serving the greater needs of the community.

The 16 young ladies each volunteered over 2,658 hours serving many local charities including: The American Cancer Society, Interfaith Community Services, the Poway Library and the Poway Senior Center. Known as the “Ticktockers”, they will graduate next month from Poway High, Del Norte High and the Academy of Our Lady of Peace.

The 16 girls honored are: Alexis Borg, Mary Beth Dato, Nicole Dobrotin, Maura Duggan, Caroline Gilbert, Shannon Hamilton, Kelly Hoffman, Elizabeth Jelsma, Madeleine Johnstone, Kathryn Klahn, Courtney McCandless, Jamie McCandless, Kelly Skarupa, Rana Verhoog, Kelly Walker and Kelly Walsh.

POWAY HIGH HALL OF FAME HONORS NEW INDUCTEES

The second class of inductees into Poway High School's Hall of Fame will be honored in a ceremony Friday, May 31 at the Bernardo Winery, 13330 Paseo Del Verano Norte, in Rancho Bernardo. This year's inductees are Poway High graduates Kellye Cash, Marie Chiment, Jeanne Hume and Assemblyman Brian Maienschein. They join Mayor Don Higginson, Jeffrey Belk, Jud Buechler and Dr. Matthew Fei, who were inducted last year.

The Hall of Fame honors individuals in business, athletics, arts, sciences, public service and community service, who have worked to make the community a better place. The event begins with a Happy Hour and pasta dinner catered by Cafe Merlot at 5 p.m. and recognition ceremony beginning at 6 p.m. The Poway High Jazz Band will perform. Tickets are $35 and available at PowayHighFoundation.org.
