Poway Gives Back: 'Fit' Poway Parade, Soroptimists and Giving Blood

Poway Days Parade is still looking for sponsorships.

By Bill Stoudenmire

I LOVE A PARADE!

Plans are taking shape for the 49th annual Poway Days Parade, thanks to the quick work of parade Chair Pauline Getz and her committee. Save the date: Saturday, Sept. 7. The parade almost didn’t happen this year when previous organizers stepped down and that’s why the Rotary Club of Poway-Scripps stepped in to save the day. The parade will follow its traditional route, from the intersection of Poway and Pomerado Roads, east on Poway road to Bowron. It will begin at 9 a.m.

This year's parade theme is, “I Love a Fit Poway.” The festivities will include The Poway Days 5K. This inaugural event will be a non-competitive Fun Run focusing on participation rather than competition. A shorter one-mile course is also planned. Race Director is Poway businessman Frank Freund. The 5K will begin and end at Poway Community Park beginning at 7 a.m.

According to Getz, “Poway Rotary has always fostered the principles of volunteerism among all the service clubs and this is no exception. The Poway Soroptimists will host their Wellness Madness fair and the Kiwanis will host a pancake breakfast, each at the finish area in community park. It is our hope that families will come for the run, visit both the fair and the breakfast, and then walk over to the parade”.

With an initial $5,000 from our friends at Walmart, the biggest challenge is raising funds needed to continue the Poway Days Parade tradition. Sept.7 less than 60 days away and the parade committee is reaching out to the business community to help “SAVE THE PARADE” through your sponsorship. They need your contribution quickly and will make it easy to contribute by check, credit card or PayPal at www.powayparade.org. The site is currently under construction but contact links are at the bottom of the home page so you can get all the information. You can also follow on Facebook. Thanks in advance.

SPEAKING OF SOROPTIMISTS

Congratulations to the Poway club's new President. She is Tanya Lewis, who works as a realtor with Keller-Williams, has been a Soroptimist for 3 years and began her year on July 1. Their mission is to improve the lives of women and girls in our community and throughout the world. Tanya's first challenge is the Wellness Madness fair during Poway Days as mentioned in the above parade story. Last year it was held in the Walmart parking lot and featured healthcare workers, vendors and info on how to stay healthy. The Poway Soroptimists meet the first and third Wednesdays of each month from 7:20 to 8:30am at Cafe Merlot in the Bernardo Winery.
