Poway Gives Back: Chelsea's Run, Orchestra Concert & Pageant

See how you can help finish Chelsea's run this weekend.

FINISH CHELSEA'S RUN

It's the third annual 5K honoring the memory of Poway High student Chelsea King, whose life was cut tragically short by a heinous crime while she was in the midst of her training run on the trails at Lake Hodges in 2010. We mentioned it here in mid-January and now the race is this Saturday at Balboa Park. Over 5,000 San Diegans are expected to participate starting at 7:30 a.m. Online registration is available through this Wednesday at chelseaslight.org. Day of race registration begins at 6:30 a.m. You have the option to run for fun or for time.

This is the primary fundraiser for the Chelsea's Light Foundation's Sunflower Scholarship Fund, which provides scholarships to San Diego County college-bound teens who have embraced the characteristics that reflect Chelsea King's thirst for knowledge, service-over-self ethic and indomitable spirit. Since the first official run in 2011, the foundation has provided college scholarships to 21 amazing kids. Join those passionate about protecting children and inspiring positive change in the community this Saturday.

STRIKE UP THE BAND!

The annual PUSD Middle School Orchestra Festival Concert is this Sunday, March 3, at Poway Center for the Performing Arts. What is a festival concert? It's a performance of orchestra students from the seventh and eighth grade middle school orchestras in the PUSD and greater San Diego area. Two selections of music are performed for an adjudicator who will grade and then clinic each ensemble.

Symphony conductor and musical director for the World Youth Symphony Orchestra, Jung-Ho Pak, will adjudicate six ensembles in this year’s festival. Each will be allotted 30 minutes on stage to warm up, perform and receive their clinic. It all starts at 11 a.m. this Sunday. Admission is free but donations will be graciously accepted at the door. The Performing Arts Center is on Titan Way next to Poway High.

STRIKE A POSE!

Once again, it's time to crown Miss Poway and Miss Teen Poway. The annual pageant, coordinated by Poway Lions President Sharon Gruber, is set for Saturday, April 27 at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts. This year, it's open not only to those teens 13-16 and adults 18-24 who live in the 92064, but for the first time to all girls in the PUSD, including Rancho Bernardo, Rancho Peñasquitos, Carmel Mountain Ranch, 4S Ranch and Sabre Springs. The next pageant orientation meeting (you missed the first one) is this Sunday, March 3 at the Poway Community Center. Deadline for signing up to compete is Sunday, March 10.
