Poway Gives Back: Blood Drive, Valley Alumni & Spirit Day Success

Check out photos from Poway Spirit Day and see how Valley Elementary School plans to celebrate its 50th anniversary this year.

POWAY SHOWED ITS SPIRIT!

It started as an idea to bring the city, local service groups and volunteers all together for one big event. Seven years later, Poway Spirit Day is still a hit. On Saturday, over 130 volunteers showed up at the Boys and Girls Club at 7:30 a.m. ready to go to work. We sent them to Iron Mountain, Garden Road Park, Twin Peaks and Pomerado, the lemon grove by Adobe Ridge Park, The Pond off Old Pomerado, the trail above Silver Lake Drive and to the trail by Gateway Medical Center to mulch, trim, clear brush and repair the trails. All projects were fully completed well before noon, when we all met back at the B&G for lunch served by the Poway Elks Club. Poway Parks Maintenance Supervisor Bob Hahn, who drove from site to site making sure everyone had what they needed and providing direction, told me the work far exceeded his expectations.

A big thank you to the Soroptimists for handling check in, to the Poway Lions Club and Kiwanis Club for bringing volunteers, to the Elks, to Walmart for its generous donation and to Starbucks for proving coffee for 130! A big special thank you to the 1st LAR marines from Pendleton, who worked like, well, Marines! Thanks to my fellow Rotarians who helped get it all done smoothly and to all the volunteers who worked so hard. Way to give back! More photos are on the Rotary Club of Poway-Scripp's Facebook page. VALLEY ELEMENTARY TURNS 50!

The 7th annual Cinco de Mayo Trail Run, put on by the Valley Elementary Educational Foundation, is set for Saturday, May 4 at Lake Poway. What makes the day even more special is that the school is celebrating it's 50th birthday and this week the Poway City Council will proclaim May 4, 2013, as Valley Elementary Day. To help commemorate the day, the school is calling back all Valley alumni who have graduated in the last 50 years to join them at Lake Poway for the race. Race teams have been set up for each decade, starting with the 60's, and team captains are needed to head each team. Email Krystn Monroe at kmonroe@ValleyEEF.org.

The race itself is expected to draw professional runners, athletes and families from all over San Diego County. The unique course attracts runners at every level, challenging to elite runners and triathletes as well as those just looking for a nature hike. There's a 10K and a 5K. Ticket prices are $35 adults, $25 ages 8-17, $10 for 7 and under. Here's where you can find the flier: CincodeMayoTrailRun.org.
