FOOD FOR FOUR-LEGGED KIDS
PETCO Foundation is helping to make the season bright for your four-legged kids as well. Its chain of stores are participating in the National Pet Food Drive from now until Sunday. Help pet parents in need by donating un-opened cans and bags of pet food or litter, which can be brought to the store’s collection bins. Hill’s Science Diet will match, pound for pound, all dog and cat food donated, up to 100,000 pounds. VFW FOOD FOR SOLDIERS
The Post 7907, is collecting food donations for three active duty soldiers and their families. This has become an annual tradition. They need nonperishable food items, which will be presented to the families in baskets for the holidays. Find contact information for the post on its website.
Meanwhile, Veterans Day is Friday. VFW post 7907 is joining with the Fleet Reserve Association Branch 70 and the American Legion Post 479 to host a tribute at the (next to ), at 11 a.m. The tribute will include the firing of a Civil War replica cannon, local scouts helping to present the colors, chaplains from the veterans groups offering prayers and more.

ICE RINK SPONSORS NEEDED
As you have probably heard, the city of Poway is putting up an outdoor ice skating rink in , which is scheduled to be open to skaters Dec. 16-19. The rink will be part of “Winter Fest”, being run by the city and including arts and crafts, a one-day snow hill, musical entertainment and other family-friendly activities. While the city council has voted to spend $30,000 in general funds to pay for the plastic-coated rink, skate rentals and other related expenses, council members are soliciting sponsorships from the community to help underwrite the costs.
