National Charity League Honors Poway High's Senior Girls

The students performed over 8,000 hours of volunteer work last year.

SENIOR GIRLS GIVE BACK

Poway's chapter of the National Charity League, a national non-profit organization of mothers and daughters dedicated to performing community service, honored Poway High's senior girl members at an event at Rancho Bernardo Inn on May 7.  One of 160 chapters across the country, the chapter performed over 8,000 hours of service in the past year.  These activities included volunteer work for the Poway library, American Cancer Society, Poway Senior Center, after-school homework club, special olympics, North County Interfaith Community Services and more. The main emphasis of the National Charity League is to foster a life-long passion for philanthropy and to strengthen the mother-daughter bond.

FRIENDS AND FAMILY

On May 14, volunteers teamed with 200 from San Diego's homeless community at the downtown Salvation Army building and packaged over 100,000 meals to send to disaster-ravaged Japan.  In addition, some 40 boxes of toys, coloring books, art supplies, puzzles, and board games were packaged to ship with the food.  If you've ever participated (and you should) the feeling of empowerment you get brings you back again and again. Estimated value of the package was $35,000.  Many stayed hours beyond the time they committed. Word is Phil Harris even got a break on the microphone.

SHOTGUN

It'll be an 8 a.m. shotgun start on Wednesday, June 15, when the Kiwanis Club of Poway hosts a charity golf classic at MCAS Miramar Memorial Golf Course in support of their many activities associated with children.  It's a 4-person scramble.  $110 gets you green fee, cart, range balls, lunch and awards.  There will be prizes for closest to the pin, longest drive, top teams plus opportunity drawings. Contact committee chairman Mike Szoka at (619) 844-8399.

LEGISLATORS OF THE YEAR

The Veterans of Foreign War hosted its annual Legislative Day Reception on May 10 in Sacramento. Every year they present an award to those legislators who have made a tangible impact in the lives of California's veterans.  This year State Sen. Bob Dutton (R-Rancho Cucamonga) was honored for authoring a bill providing an exemption from sales and use taxes at thrift stores like the Navy Relief Society on military bases, and for a bill that permits military family members to keep Legion of Valor license plates as a family heirloom.  Meanwhile, State Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher (R-Poway) is the first veteran of the War on Global Terror to serve on the legislature.  He was honored for authoring a bill to establish a voluntary contribution fund to finance programs and services at the California Veteran's Homes and another fund for self insurance of the homes that veterans are buying through the Cal-Vet Farm and Home Loan Program.
