Marathoner Kimberley Beatty Won a Different Run: School Board Seat

Kimberley Beatty ran a hard race last November and won.

Beatty beat a 14-year incumbent for a seat on the Poway Unified School District board of trustees. Although the gig takes up much of her time, Beatty said she loves it.

“The job combines so many of my passions and interests including, public education, children, the law, public policy and finance,” she said.

“It is a tremendous honor to serve our community in this capacity and I encourage all community members to come and learn about what we are doing for the next generation and also see the wonderful programs we have to offer all our community members.”

When Beatty isn’t donning her trustee hat, she’s involved with her children’s schools, PTAs and extracurriculars. She was also previously involved in Poway Soccer.

The law school graduate said she is most proud of her four children.

“I am in awe of their wisdom, talents, successes and kindness,” she said. “They make me happy and I am blessed.”

If her resume isn’t enough—Beatty has run 15 marathons in the past six years, including the prestigious Boston Marathon.

She said all the women she admires hold three traits: “She devotes herself to a cause beyond her own life; she has the courage to stand up and speak out for what’s right, even if she stands alone; and she must move out of her comfort zone in order to do these things.”

What does Women’s History Month mean to you?

“Women’s History Month is a celebration of women pioneers throughout America’s history who broke through barriers in our society to make progress for our country and to carve a path for future generations of women to have greater opportunities for success.  What comes to mind are: The Suffrage Movement, Civil Rights, contributions in science & the arts, and the care and protection of children.”
