Leader No. 25: Michael Baum’s Adventures Include Starting a Tour Company

The 23-year-old founder of Heart-Pounding Adventures says mother’s health kick inspired him.

At just 23, Michael Baum is the founder of Heart-Pounding Adventures—offering adrenaline-rush tours in safe environments.

Baum, who also volunteers as a coach at Westview High School, said he has bigger plans for his venture.

“Whether flying a jetpack, driving a speed boat, skydiving, or standup paddle boarding, the adventures we are able to bring to locals and travelers alike have been truly amazing,” he said.

“I am also excited to be combining my passion for working with kids with my love of adventure through my new local sleep-away summer camp for middle and high school students, along with my co-owner, launching in summer 2013!”

Baum said he’s inspired by his mother, who made a “commitment to a healthier lifestyle.”

Recognizing her habits were posing an immediate hazard to her health, she decided to take up running, which has resulted in a weight loss of 50-plus pounds.

“And she is currently only a few months from running her first full marathon,” he said. “She also hooked the rest of my family on better exercise habits, and has given talks in the local community to inspire others the value of making a commitment to health. Her passion, drive, dedication and commitment are all traits I strive to achieve each day with everything I do.”

Advice for young people:

“Always move forward.  When you have an idea, put it into practice first.  You can always go back and change it, but start it on that day, at that time, with whatever resources you have.  Just keep moving.”
