Leader No. 14: Sandy Young Is More Than the Sum of Publicist Parts

The 29-year-old also has been involved in some nonprofits, including Mira Mesa HEROES.

Sandy Young knows the importance of public relations.

The 29-year-old, an award-winning publicist, is a senior account executive for J. Walcher Communications where she works with clients like United Way.

She said she got into her field because of her love for its ingredients.

“From a young age, I loved writing, coordinating, learning about new things and meeting new people, and public relations allows me to do all of the above,” said Young, who also freelances for La Jolla Patch.

But Young also is involved in her community.

She’s worked with Mira Mesa HEROES, So-Cal Fire Poster Project and UC San Diego’s Associated Students for Teens tutoring program, among other organizations.

She said she’s most proud of serving as a role model.

“As the oldest child not only in my family but [also] from both of my parents’ extended families, I have grown up with a strong mothering instinct,” she said. “Thus, I have served as an internship coordinator for many years, mentored junior staff, provided countless informational interviews, and spoken to groups of students and new professionals. I am so proud of what many of them have since accomplished."

Advice for young people:

“Figure out what you want to do and work hard to get there. And relish the process.”
