It's Never Out Of Style to Set New Year's Resolution Health Goals

Make this the year for change for incorporating strategies designed to help you reach your health and wellness goals.

I was not planning on writing about New Year’s resolutions because I felt like it was too obvious a choice. However, I tend to write about experiences that I have because I think that if it’s happening to me, it's probably happening to someone else. So, I will share about my recent experience with my new friend Bob, who was a friend my in-laws invited over for Christmas dinner.

Bob and I struck up a conversation about his health. Clearly he was overweight and I could tell he had a limp. I asked about his limp and I learned all about his health problems. He has , high blood pressure, high cholesterol, self-diagnosed obsessive compulsive disorder, and is suffering knee pain from a fall in the bath tub. I also learned that Bob has not had a job in more than 20 years and stays at home most of the time—eating.

I also learned that Bob has been given some really bad advice concerning his health. After a nearly two-hour conversation, it reaffirmed to me that New Year’s resolutions regarding health are never out of style and it’s never too late to change your health habits for the better.

I think that a lot of people begin the year thinking they are going to exercise more. This is a great place to start. Just remember to start out slowly and progress into a more vigorous exercise routine. may be a great option and even getting a personal trainer can be the icing on the cake. I learned that Bob was a member of a local gym so I recommended that he participate in a group class or exercise in the pool because his weight-bearing capabilities are limited.

Setting goals is also a key component to successful behavior change. Set some to get your year off right. It’s also a good idea to get a physical so you know what your cholesterol levels are and what your body chemistry is telling you.

A new strategy that I have become aware of is health, wellness and exercise apps. There are several really good apps that can systematically help you keep track of your calories, exercise, water intake and weight. So if you are glued to your phone, use it to help you make good diet and exercise choices.

To Bob, and all of you who are suffering from poor health and mobility, make this year the year to change your ways and commit to living a full life—a life that is free from medication, pain and despair. You are the only person who can make the decision to be healthy. It’s up to you and you are up to the task.
