A convention that is scheduled to bring former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and entrepreneur Richard Branson to San Diego is scheduled to get underway today.
Workshops prior to the main gathering for the 2014 Biotechnology Industry Organization International Convention will be held this weekend at the Marriott Marquis and Marina.
More than 16,000 biotech representatives are expected to descend on San Diego for the conference, which will move to the San Diego Convention Center for activities Monday through Thursday.
Branson is set to speak Tuesday.
Clinton, who is promoting her new book, "Hard Choices," in advance of a decision on whether to seek the presidency, is set to appear Wednesday. She will appear at Warwick's bookstore in La Jolla before her convention speech.
The conference will also feature an "innovation zone" sponsored by the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation showcasing biotech startup companies, and a convention floor with more than 1,700 exhibitors.
A welcoming reception is scheduled for Monday night aboard the USS Midway Aircraft Carrier Museum.
