From Morale to Marriage: Veterans Day Is a Time of Celebration

After the Veterans Day ceremony at Veterans Park, Boatswain's Mate Rick Bain will tie the knot with fiancée Cathy Schmidt.

There may be rain in the forecast Friday, but that won’t stop Veterans Day activities from happening as scheduled―or a wedding afterward for that matter.

“We go to war in the snow; we go to war in the rain,” said , president of the Veterans Committee. “We just won’t have a ceremony if there’s lightning.”

Stonecipher served in the Navy for 24 years and says there’s a big difference between Memorial Day and Veterans Day. The latter is strictly a celebration.

“It’s the meaning of comradeship,” he said. “Every serviceman takes an oath. When you leave the service, no one takes that oath away from you. It never goes away.”

But Boatswain’s Mate Rick Bain will celebrate another type of camaraderie as he and fiancée Cathy Schmidt tie the knot after the official ceremony. The couple has been together two years and Bain, 36, has 18 months left in the Navy.

The Veterans Day ceremony starts at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11 at Veterans Park and will feature a posting of the colors and the firing of the park’s canon. Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7907 will be joined by participants from a local Cub Scout troop, the American Legion Post 479 and Fleet Reserve Association Branch 70.
