Disaster in Japan Shows Us What's Really Important in Our Lives

Are you so busy at times that you forget to appreciate what you have from time to time?

Waking up Friday morning and hearing the terrible and sad news about Japan’s disaster brought tears to my eyes. As I stood in front of the television, trying to get ready for my day, I couldn’t peel myself away. What a horrific tragedy, and one that was unfortunately uncontrollable.

After working downtown in a high-rise on the 33rd floor myself for the last 10 years and my experience with earthquakes, it brought back many scary memories. I could relate to the terror and panic that the people in Japan were experiencing as the earthquake hit, including the many aftershocks. Being that high, there is nothing you can do but ride it out and hope for the best. There is a feeling of helplessness.

Fortunately, I have not experienced a tsunami, and fortunately our earthquakes here in San Diego haven’t triggered any tsunami disasters. I cannot absorb the losses that each person is going through in Japan. I just cannot imagine their unknowns, such as missing a family member, friend, pet—and the many lives taken.

We are so busy and so preoccupied with our daily lives and schedules that we tend to put off what is most important: connection. I’m guilty!

Unfortunately, it takes a disaster, death or accident to bring people together—closer together. Why is that? My eyes have been opened once again and once again I look around at what I have and appreciate it every day. Now, again, I know that I need to stay in contact with family and friends, whether they live close or not. Give my child that extra kiss or hug each day.

How much extra time out of my day will the extras take? A minute, maybe five, and I know I can afford that time. Anyone can!

Give that extra kiss or hug, pick up the phone to say hi, and live today like it’s the last day of the rest of your life. More importantly, appreciate what you have!  Monetary items can be replaced, family and friends cannot.
